I found the last quote in the June 3 article “Somali man’s death spurs rally” very offensive. Mr. Spencer was quoted suggesting that the Somalis should leave town instead of protesting the death of one of their community.

While it appears from the autopsy that the police did not harm Mr. Samater, I don’t blame the Somalis for feeling upset at his sudden death.

The article also mentioned that “everyday complaints” by the Somali community such as “cars broken into” have not been investigated by police in the past. If the police aren’t investigating complaints by Somalis, that is a problem. No people should feel afraid, and police should protect the Somalis from crime.

More important, we as a community need to welcome the Somalis and appreciate the culture and character they have brought to Maine.
