BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) – At least five bombs, most them packed in vehicles, detonated in and around Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 40 people and injuring dozens, authorities said.

In the latest attack, a parked car exploded at the outdoor Amin market in the capital, killing at least 10 people and wounding 10 others, police said. The explosion occurred about 9 p.m. in the al-Shaab neighborhood, a mixed Sunni Arab-Shiite neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, Lt. Thaer Mahmoud said.

It was the second car bomb in the same area. The first killed five people and injured more than a dozen, police said.

Earlier, a car bomb in north Baghdad killed six people and injured 15, police said. That occurred in the Kazimiyah suburb and apparently targeted a group of day laborers, police Capt. Mohammed Al-Waili said.

Two bombs also hit a market and a police patrol in separate morning attacks in Baghdad, killing at least 19 people and wounding more than 40.

Meanwhile, Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said that four people were killed, including an Australian security guard, in a roadside bombing in northern Iraq.

Downer told the Nine television network of Sydney, Australia, that the blast occurred Thursday about 180 miles north of Baghdad, but did not further specify the location.

He said the 34-year-old Australian, who wasn’t identified, worked for a private security agency and was guarding a convoy at the time of the attack. There was no further information on the other casualties or or the attack.
