CANTON – Selectmen were pleased to have former Code Enforcement Officer Stan Haynes apply for the vacant position and Thursday unanimously signed his contract for one year.

Haynes asked the board for a yearly salary of $8,000, paid biweekly, which includes mileage as well. He will also see to any new training he needs.

Canton has been without a code officer for at least six months, and selectmen immediately assigned him several jobs. One was to check out a wood boiler for Maurice Hebert. Fire Chief Wayne Dube has already told Hebert the boiler is unsafe. He doesn’t meet the setback of 20 feet, but Hebert says he can’t move it any more.

The town has received complaints from neighbors because the houses are very close together and the boiler is in between. The board will wait until Haynes checks the site before giving Hebert permission to put up a chimney.

Another complaint came from neighbors of Pete Wilson on Hayford Court, who say Wilson has put in an illegal apartment. The single dwelling sits on one quarter of an acre, not enough for a two family home.

The board asked Haynes to visit Wilson and determine if he actually has added an apartment and has another family living there. Wilson had also not filed a permit for renovations.

Without a code enforcement officer, the town has had little way of checking on building activity.

Sunday is a final salvage opportunity on nine homes in the flood plain slated for June demolition. Selectmen will be present to accept cash or personal check for any items that are purchased. Those items must be taken at the time of purchase.

So far, the town has raised about $8,500. This money will likely be put back into the buy-out program.

Canton Relay for Life participants brought home the Traveling Trophy for the second consecutive year. The 13 participants raised $8,600. The trophy goes to the team who raised the most money per member.
