June activities
LEWISTON – Modern Woodmen of America’s District Office at 184 Webster St. is sponsoring activities in June for members and their guests.
Camp 8609: Wednesday, June 14, from 4 to 7 p.m., Chick-A-Dee Restaurant, Route 4, Turner.
Camp 14346: Wednesday, June 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. (rain date June 28), Roy’s Allsteak Hamburger, Center Street, Auburn.
Camp 12749: Tuesday, June 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., Taber’s Lakeside Stand, 473 Lakeshore Drive, Auburn.
Tickets need to be purchased at the office for all activities, and tickets can only be picked up the week prior to the activity, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Summer park tickets are also available. Call 782-1833 for details.
Post cleanup
LISBON – VFW Post 9459 will hold its monthly clean-up beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 18, at the post, Route 196. Help is always needed in cleaning and getting post home ready for summer activities. For details, call 353-5291 after 4 p.m.
Robin Dow meeting
AUBURN – Robin Dow Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the Alden M. Gayton Post 31, American Legion, 426 Washington St. The board of directors will meet at 10 a.m. A food sale will be held following the meeting, and members are reminded to include their favorite homebaked goodies, garden vegetables and flowers. There will be no raffle table.
For the trip to Foster’s Lobster House, York, June 30, reservations may be made with Evelyn Sawin at Robin Dow meetings, or phone her at 998-4577. Cost is $49. One does not have to be a member in order to attend.
When members met May 24 with their president, Merry Strout, in charge, 69 were present. Memorial services were held for members who had died during the past year, with Lucy Cowles and Chaplain Patricia Donohue in charge, assisted by Audrey Fleming and Caroline Chapman. At the conclusion of the program, Ralph Lashua played his guitar and sang.
Paula Mikkelsen, visiting her mother, Lucy Cowles, on her 90th birthday, was welcomed as a guest. Mildred Brainard was introduced as a new member, and congratulations were received by Donald and Lorielie Fyfe on their recent marriage. May birthdays were recognized. Attendance prize winners were Midge Demers and Marge Gardner; pot of gold, Elsie Whitney, Nancy Roy and Dorothy Larrabee.
Learn to bead
LEWISTON – A four-part beading class to learn the basic techniques will be held at 6 p.m. June 19 through 28 at the Club 50 room next to Campus Cuisine. Supply kits will be provided by the instructor, Doris Forgues; participants should bring scissors, a small terrycloth towel and small dishes to bead in. The two-hour classes cost $33. Mother of year
SABATTUS – Alta Bouchard was chosen Mother of the Year 2006 by the Jacques Cartier Club, Wales Road. Her family was present when she was chosen for the honor.
Friends training
LEWISTON – Best Friends Training will be held for caregivers of someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Participants will join other families to explore the day-to-day experience of caregiving and learn practical strategies for making things easier.
The free training will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 30, at SeniorsPlus, Fairgrounds Business Complex, 8 Falcon Road
Participants should bring a bag lunch. Advance registration is required. RSVP to Kathy Brill at 795-4010, ext. 133, by June 20.
Graduates
BRIDGTON – George Foisy, son of Kenneth and Pat Foisy of Lewiston, graduated recently from Bridgton Academy, the nation’s only all-postgraduate college preparatory school for young men, located in North Bridgton.
Foisy, who graduated with honors, received third place in the Brown Essay Contest. Foisy will attend Arcadia University.
Bridge results
NEW GLOUCESTER – The New Gloucester Bridge Club met June 11 in the Masonic Building, corner of Routes 100 and 231.
Finishing first in Flight A and B were Linda Leotsakos and Sue Kaluzynski; second in Flight A, Bunny Banks and Les Buzzell; third in Flight A and B, Sally Johnston and Pat Schlegel.
There will be no game on June 18 due to the sectional tournament in Kennebunk. The next game will be Sunday, June 25. A partner is guaranteed, For information, call Les Buzzell at 783-4153 or 754-9153. All bridge players are welcome.
The following week there will be no game as it is the 4th of July weekend.
