School to close
WEST PARIS – The Agnes L. Gray School will close at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, for summer vacation. The After School program will run Monday and Tuesday, June 12 and 13, and Wednesday, June 14, if 10 or more sign up. School will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 30. The school office will reopen Monday, Aug. 21.
Club meeting
PARIS – The Extra Mile ATV Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the town office. New members are welcome.
Seniors dinner
OXFORD – The Lake Thompson Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, for a trip to the Village Inn in Auburn for the June meeting and a dinner at noon.
Those who signed up for the trip should meet at Ames parking lot in Oxford. There will be transportation waiting for all who are planning to make the trip.
Society speaker
WEST PARIS – The West Paris Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, June 19, for a potluck supper. Hugh Swan to show and talk about wooden toys made in Bryant Pond and some he has made himself. The business meeting will follow. All are welcome. Those attending the dinner should bring a potluck dish. For more information, call Betty Jones, 674-2507.
Featured speaker
PARIS – Judith “Warm Tears” Hayes will be the featured speaker at the meeting of the Paris Cape Historical Society at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the society museum, 77 High St.
Refreshments will be served after the program. Warm Tears is an Abenaki Indian, writer and photographer. She will speak about her trips to Canada on foot with her grandmother. She has many recollections of her adventures, which she has kept in her personal journal. She will bring items to show, including baskets and pictures. All are welcome.
The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays for viewing the artifacts or to do research.
Library talk
NORWAY – “Why Remember Shepards” is the title of a talk to be given by Joy Moll at the Norway Memorial Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22.
Moll is the author of the recently published book, “Ties to a Maine Lake; Farmers, Vacationers and the Town of Norway,” which recounts the history of Shepard’s Camps and the land on Crockett Ridge from which it developed.
In her talk she will focus on the impact that the Shepard family and the camps have had on the town, including economic, civic, social, environmental and literary.
Following the talk, the public is invited to share memories of Shepard’s Camps and related Norway and lake history. Books will be available for sale.
During June there is a display in the library’s glass case of memorabilia of Shepard’s Camps, and the public is invited to contribute pictures and items related to the camps. Refreshments on June 22 will include apple pie and walnut pudding, which were on the restaurant menu at Shepard’s. For more information, call the library at 743-5309.
