FARMINGTON – Nancy Chase was selected the “Sister (Member) of the Year” at the potluck supper of Farmington Emblem Club 460 on June 1.
Chase was surprised and pleased as past sisters of the year made their way to her while a poem, written by Judy Lane, Nancy Crosby and Mabel Cox, was read by last year’s Sister of the Year, Sharon Jacques. Chase received a special charm bracelet, a flower arrangement and a cake made and decorated by Kamilla Hall. Chase is an active member of the club.
Christine Greenleaf, new president, called her first meeting to order. There were 38 members present and 72 absent for a total of 110.
Chase, Americanism chairwoman, spoke about participating in the Elks Flag Day ceremony on June 11. Chase asked for volunteers to participate in flag-folding ceremonies at local nursing homes at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 14. She reminded everyone to fly their flags on special days during the summer. She also asked for volunteers to help with the club-sponsored doll carriage parade at the Blueberry Festival in Wilton in August.
Drug Awareness Chairwoman Lois Barker read some tips during the program. Diana Oliver, literary chairwoman, made several bookmarks. She asked that members save their books during the summer, and she’ll take donations of books again next fall.
Sylvia Richards, in charge of getting workers for Farmington Fair, had sign-up sheets available for those who want to work at the Elk and Emblem food booth in September. The club’s annual yard sale will be held at the home of Kamilla Hall on Saturday, July 15. She got volunteers to help that day.
Past President Quinnale Kinsey chose the neonatal center at Maine Medical Center to receive a donation from the club in her name. A donation will be made to Community Concepts.
Because 10 club members will go to the national convention in Baltimore in September, the meeting that month will be changed to Sept. 14. The mystery gift was won by Lois Barker, the pot-of-gold by Debbie Holt, and the 50-50 raffle by Connie Small.
