MONMOUTH – A move to return to the traditional town meeting failed at the ballot box Tuesday at Cumston Hall. The official vote tally was unavailable late Tuesday night.

It was the second year residents have voted on the annual town warrant by referendum at the polls.

Residents also passed a school budget of $6,797,232 for the 2006-2007 fiscal year that begins July 1. In order to receive $5,983,390 from the state’s Essential Programs and Services Funding Act, residents voted to raise and appropriate $1.8 million as their town’s contribution.

Also under the EPS Funding Act, the school board’s request for additional funds of $755,882, exceeding the state’s four-year phase-in model by $261,623, was approved by voters. According to the town warrant, the amount was requested to help maintain smaller classroom sizes, co-curricular programs, transportation, special education and food service support.

Residents also passed the Fire Department budget of $85,997 and Police Department budget of $271,792.

Although no tax rate was announced, Town Clerk Diane MacDougall said residents can expect to see a slight increase.

After the resignation of two selectmen, voters elected Pauline McDougald for two years and Daniel Bilodeau for one year. Serving a full three-year term is Philip Thibodeau.
