LIVES SAVED: Leaders of a national campaign announced Wednesday that hospital industry efforts have prevented the unnecessary deaths of about 122,000 people in the last 18 months.

HOW THEY DID IT: Many hospitals adopted at least some of six measures to reduce infections and guard against errors.

NEXT STEP: Campaign leaders want all hospitals to adopt all six changes by the beginning of 2007.
