SUMNER – Students, parents and fellow teachers bid farewell Tuesday to Principal Lucy Johnson, two retiring teachers and three others who were leaving.
Johnson has served for two years as principal of the elementary school. She accepted a position as assistant principal at Oxbow High School in Bradford, Vt.
In a varied program of special presentations, slides and musical numbers by the school orchestra and chorus, the students said their goodbyes on Tuesday, the last day of school. A reception followed the recognition assembly for the teachers as well as for the 53 volunteers who have helped in the classrooms over the year.
Fifth-grade teacher Majorie Shaw is retiring after 25 years of teaching and third-grade teacher Diana Tolman is retiring after 29 years.
Third-grade teacher Christopher Galgay is taking a leave of absence to serve as president of the Maine Teachers Association. Sixth-grade teacher Sally Smith is moving to Arizona and literacy teacher Regina Hutchinson is leaving.
