NORWAY – Leon “Sonny” Verrill, 81, of Woodstock, died in Norway on June 14.

He was born in East Providence, R.I. on Sept. 14, 1924, the son of Alton J. and Catherine V. (Keifer) Verrill. He moved to Woodstock when he was 13 years old and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1942.

After graduation he served in the U.S. Army and worked as a woodsman all his life. He married Marguerite Johnson on May 29, 1958. Sonny was a member of the Woodstock Seventh Day Advent Church, was an avid gardener and loved poetry.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Johnson Hatch Verrill of South Woodstock; four sons, Brian Verrill and his wife, Karen, of Canton, Jerry Verrill and his wife, Debi, of South Woodstock, Thomas Verrill and his wife, Carole, of Apopka, Fla. and Alan Verrill and his wife, Melitta, of Auburn; one daughter, Beverly Brainard of West Paris; two sisters, Alida Blood of South Lancaster, Mass. and Miriam Moore of Stoneham, Mass.; and 11 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Evelyn Verrill; and a son-in-law, Daniel Brainard.

The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice and the Stephens Memorial Hospital staffs for their loving care and kindness shown Sonny during his illness.
