MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Chris Smith scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings and Luis Jimenez and David Bacani homered to help the Portland Sea Dogs shut out the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 8-0 Friday night.
Smith (7-3) struck out four and allowed just one base runner between the second and sixth innings, while Jonathan Searles and Victor Ramos combined to allow just two hits over the final two frames.
Jimenez set the tone early for Northern Division leading Portland (39-23), belting his eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot coming with two out in the top of the first.
Bacani followed with a solo shot in the second for a 3-0 lead. Portland chipped away for two more in the fifth as Chad Spann doubled home Brandon Moss, and later scored on a passed ball. Moss finished with two hits and scored three times.
The Sea Dogs closed out the scoring with three in the eighth. Spann singled home Zach Borowiak for his second RBI of the night and Jimenez added a fielder’s choice RBI for his third of the night. Moss later scored on a fielding error.
Mike MacDonald (6-4) took the loss for New Hampshire (29-35), allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out five and walking two.
Adam Lind, Ron Davenport and Chip Cannon added two hits for the Fisher Cats.
