LISBON – The Lisbon Falls Baptist Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25, with a program commemorating its growth from an initial 15 members to the 250 church-goers now attending.
In the three buildings, 34 ministers and 150 years since its inception in 1856, the church has accumulated a heritage that it will share with the community.
To help participants understand how the church has changed in the past century and a half, the program will include presentations on youth groups, mission societies and ladies’ aid groups of bygone Sundays, special music and greetings from two former church ministers.
Those attending are encouraged to wear historical costumes representing any of the past 15 decades as a nod to past congregations.
Lisbon Falls Baptist Church started as the parish church occupying a since-destroyed building at the site of Crosman’s Funeral Home’s parking lot on Main Street.
In 1856 and under the name of Free Baptist, the church moved to the steepled, wooden church building, now a residence, on the corner of Main and High streets. There, the church changed its name to the United Baptist Church in 1926.
The congregation now meets in the brick building on Route 196, which it built in 1968. Eight years later, the church voted on its current name.
