WILTON – Police arrested a Wilton man after they found him unconscious and allegedly under the influence in his car before noon Friday morning.
Police Chief Wayne Gallant said police received a complaint that there was a man driving erratically on Route 2 between 9:30 and 10 Friday morning.
“We had a witness who was following the vehicle,” and was “very concerned,” Gallant said.
When police arrived, Gallant said they “found an unconscious male behind the wheel.” After investigating, they found that the driver, 45-year-old Richard Austin, whose Weld Road home burned down months ago, was “under the influence” and had a suspended license. He was arrested and charged with operating under the influence and operating after suspension and taken to the Franklin County Jail.
Austin “could have killed somebody,” Gallant said. It is “dangerous for someone to be out on the roads” under the influence. Austin’s driving “increased our chances of being a victim of his carelessness and poor lack of judgment,” he added. “What a scary combination – deadly,” he said.
