HARPSWEL (AP) – A 59-year-old clam digger was found dead Monday beneath his overturned boat in what authorities believe was a freak accident.

Larry Coffin’s body was found by two friends and fellow clammers about 15 feet from shore in the cove where he digs each morning.

Coffin was apparently trying to get into the boat or empty it of rain water when it capsized and pulled him under, investigators said.

The death was being investigated by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police and the Maine Marine Patrol, but officials said there was nothing to indicate foul play.
