SEARCH FOR MISSING: Some 8,000 Iraq and American troops conduct a massive search for the missing privates from Texas and Oregon. During the operation, the military kills three suspected insurgents and detains 34 others in fighting that wounded seven U.S. servicemen, the U.S. military says.

DEATH PENALTY: The prosecution demands the death penalty for Saddam Hussein in its closing arguments, saying he showed “no mercy” in the killings of women and children during a crackdown on Shiite Muslims in the 1980s.

INDICTMENT: Italian prosecutors request the indictment of a U.S. soldier in the fatal shooting of an Italian intelligence agent at a checkpoint in Baghdad last year.

OFFENSIVE: The U.S. military fires on suspected militants from an AC-130 gunship above the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi while hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi troops punch into an eastern section of the city.

– Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says Iraqi forces will take over security next month in southern Muthana province where Japanese troops are based.
