CANTON – Alcide J. “Jack” Melanson, 91, died Monday, June 19, at the Victorian Villa Rehabilitation & Living Center. He was a resident of Whitman Street, Mexico.

He was born in Rumford, on Sept. 14, 1914, a son of Albert and Denise (Richard) Melanson, and had attended Rumford schools.

During World War II he served as a seargent in the U.S. Army, with Company C 530th Military Police Battalion, including overseas in New Guinea Southern Philippines.

He was a certified steam engineer at Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford for more than 30 years until retirement in 1977.

Jack was a communicant of St. Theresa Church; he was an avid golfer and former member of Oakdale Country Club; he loved his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed walking, playing pool, especially with his brothers, and spent a lot of time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed sports, especially watching his son and grandsons play football.

He was married in Rumford on Jan. 14, 1946, to the former Jacqueline A. Hache, who survives, of Mexico.

Other survivors include a son, Albert Melanson and wife, Debbie, of Rumford; a daughter, Michele Griner of Sanford; three brothers, Leo Melanson of Rumford, Albert Melanson and wife, Elizabeth, of Kreuzaecker, West Germany, and Richard Melanson and wife, Julie, of Dixfield; three sisters, Bella Stone of Rumford, Ida Lyons of Pine Point, Scarborough, and Marriette Patrick of Fayetteville, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Cory and Jennifer Melanson of Windham, Jason Melanson of Biddeford and Stacy Griner of Sanford.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Omer and George Melanson; and a sister, Viola Arsenault.
