TOGUS – Paul Stevens, 83, of Jay, died early Tuesday, June 20, at the VA Hopital.
He was born, April 16, 1923, in Machias, a son of Carl and Thelma (Hanscom) Stevens. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1941.
In July 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard a “tin can” in the South Pacific until 1945. He was deployed again in September 1950 and served during the Korean conflict until 1952.
On Sept. 9, 1944, he married Audrey Corkum in Chisholm and shared 61 years of marriage.
He worked at International Paper in Jay for 38 years, retiring on Jan. 1, 1985. It was in his retirement that he and his wife began “living.” They enjoyed more than 30 cruises and traveled throughout the world.
He was a member of International Paper’s Quarter Century Club and was very proud to be Livermore Falls’ first Eagle Scout.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey of Jay; a daughter, Paula Richardson and her husband, Joseph, of Yarmouth; a son, Bruce and his wife, Louise, of Jay; five grandchildren, Mark Richardson and his wife, Marnie, of Raleigh, N.C., Jason Stevens and his wife, Meghan, of Delafield, WI, Scott Richardson of Chicago, Ill. and Joline and Janet Stevens of Jay; three great-granddaughters, Alexa Newcomb, Ellen and Anastasia Stevens.
He was predeceased by a grandaughter, Jessica Stevens.
