PARIS – Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School will soon be adorned with a memorial honoring its former students who have died either in war or in the line of duty as police officers or firefighters.
On Monday night, SAD 17’s Board of Directors approved a plan to create seven plaques engraved with the names of fallen graduates of the school.
The idea was born after Sgt. Corey Dan, who grew up in Norway and graduated from the high school in 2003, was killed in Iraq, Superintendent Mark Eastman said Tuesday. Dan’s memorial service, attended by a huge crowd, was held at the high school in March.
Eastman said the location of the memorial hasn’t been decided yet, but it will be on one of the school walls. He said he would probably leave space for more names, “but I don’t want to.”
The bronze plaques will be engraved with the names of the honored, along with their year of graduation and year of death.
“We’re looking forward to when the families see them,” Eastman said, speaking about the memorial plaques.
The following will be remembered:
Capt. Martin Niskanen, U.S. Army, class of 1962, killed in 1971.
Corpsman Ronald St. John, U.S. Navy, class of 1964, killed in 1966.
Spc. Daniel Cunningham, U.S. Army, class of 1988, killed in 2003.
Sgt. Corey Dan, U.S. Army, class of 2003, killed in 2006.
Carroll Millett, Paris police, class of 1972, killed in 1982.
Timothy Willard, Paris police, class of 1975, killed in 1978.
Rodney Bonney, Auburn police, class of 1966, killed in 1981.
