LEWISTON – Montello Elementary School teacher Michael Martel was among nine Maine teachers recognized in the annual “Starting 9” awards at a recent Sea Dogs’ game.

The annual teacher recognition program is sponsored by UnumProvident and the Portland-based baseball team. It honors nine teachers who inspire their students to high levels of learning and help students learn in a variety of ways, said Montello Principal Gus LeBlanc.

LeBlanc said he nominated Martel for several reasons.

“Michael is an outstanding classroom teacher. He provides his students with great learning instruction; he’s very clear about his goals. He teaches in different learning styles.”

In Martel’s fifth-grade classroom, some students learn in the traditional way, others work on oral presentations or more hands-on projects, LeBlanc said. “By teaching different learning styles, his students achieve very well,” LeBlanc said.

Martel, who lives in Lewiston, has taught at Montello for the past eight years and has more than 30 years of experience as an educator.
