POLAND – The Poland Regional High School Committee this week approved the formation of a committee that will raise money for improvements to athletic fields.

Director of Co-Curricular Activities Don King presented a request to form a “Light the Knights” committee. The school’s mascot is a knight.

The committee would pursue ideas and try to locate funding for several field improvements, including lighting the football field.

When the school was built, it was always the intention to install lights for the field. However, by the end of construction, money was running low and the process only got as far as laying the wiring and installing the cement bases for the lights.

All that is left to do is purchase and install the lights. King said a rough estimate for that work is $72,000. Other improvements being visualized include a marquee, a welcome sign and possibly a press box.

Total estimated cost for these improvements is between $140,000 and $160,000. The high school committee approved the forming of the “Light the Knights” committee on the condition that it must periodically report to the high school committee for guidance and approval.

The committee also approved a motion to support the Maine Readiness Campaign Principles.

“This is very much what our school is about,” said Principal Bill Doughty. He went on to describe the goals of the campaign as being to prepare students for college, citizenship and the work force.
