NORWAY – The summer season is under way at the Norway and Harrison farmers’ markets and the week of July 4th promises fun and interesting things to do.

On Monday, July 3, the Harrison market will feature a chili cook-off between all the members. Customers will have the chance to sample each version and vote for their favorite. Chili will be for sale by each participant.

The market is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday. Mary Jean will offer her southern version of chili, while Jeanette at LolliePapa Farm will have her new Mexican style chili and Mary of Little Falls Farm will bring goat meat chili.

On Thursday, July 6, Susan Bradbury of Twin Flower Fiber Farm will visit the Norway market to demonstrate spinning of mohair from her angora goats.

She will have some angora goats and angora bunnies to pet. Hand-spun yarns will be for sale and orders can be placed.

Throughout the summer Murray Herrick of Looking Down Farm will host food samples. Murray went to school to become a chef and has won local cooking contest. Murray provides recipes and cooking tips.

In June there will be asparagus pesto with garlicky spinach and feta dip; July, green salad w/strawberry-herb vinaigrette with sweet pea soup w/mushrooms and parmesan cheese; September, spaghetti w/mushrooms, olives and tomatoes, green bean and mushroom salad w/tomatoes and feta; and October, harvest vegetable soup and pumpkin bread pudding.

Weekly offerings at both markets will include seasonal local fruits, vegetables, fresh and dried herbs and perennials.

There will be fresh organic eggs, home-grown produce, home-baked goods, homemade jams, preserves, pickles and relishes. There are free samples, and at the Norway market, banjo music from the “Yet to be Named Banjo Band.”

Norway Farmers’ Market is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays in the Longley’s parking lot. Harrison Farmers’ Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays between the library and town office.
