TOWNSHIP 6, RANGE 1 (AP) – The body of an 18-year-old camper was recovered Thursday from a lake in northern Washington County after he apparently drowned when his canoe capsized.

Donald R. Phelps of Waite was camping with a group of friends on Upper Oxbrook Lake on Wednesday night when he and a friend went out in a canoe, said Maine Warden Service spokesman Mark Latti.

The canoe capsized at about 8:45 p.m. and Phelps, who could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket, went under, Latti said.

Wardens found his body at 9:45 a.m. Thursday about 100 yards from shore in waters 12 to 15 feet deep.
