SCARBOROUGH – William A. Burgess Sr., 73, died Friday, June 23, at the Maine Veterans Home.
He was born in Arundel, July 26, 1932, the son of Arthur and Elsie Wyman Burgess. He was educated in the Kennebunk school system and graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1951.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the Midway and Coral Sea from 1951 to 1955 and fought in the Korean War.
He worked in maintenance at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunk for several years and retired from the U.S. Postal service in Kennebunk in 1985. After his retirement, he moved to Phillips, and most recently lived in Farmington.
He loved to fly and he also enjoyed hunting, carpentry, woodworking projects and gardening.
He attended the Phillips Shared Ministry Church in Phillips, and most recently was a member of the Shorey Chapel UCC church in Industry.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Burgess of Farmington; two sons, William Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Richmond and Mark and his wife, Connie, of Waconia, Minn.; a brother, Allen Burgess and wife, Eve, of Kennebunk; a sister, Mary Jane and her husband, Donald Lamontagne, of Gorham, N.H.; three stepchildren, Jack Knight and wife, Cheri and grandchildren Mike and Michelle; Nancy Knight and grandchildren Jessica, John and Catherine; and Brenda and husband, Yvon Goulet and grandchildren Gwenn, husband Ken and great-grandchildren Ethan and Cora; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Janice Reynolds of Kennebunk; and a sister, Kathleen Burgess, also of Kennebunk.
