PORTLAND – George Edward Berry Sr., 76, of Falmouth, died gracefully June 24 with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Wilton on June 17, 1930, son of Howard and Alfreda Chamberlin Berry and was a graduate of Farmington High School and Bentley College.
Upon graduation, George started his career working for Harold Spear in Farmington. In 1959, George purchased Berry, Fowles & Co., CPAs of Falmouth and was the senior and managing partner for 33 years. He was a member of MSCPA and AICPA.
George was an active Mason for 55 years. He served in 1967 as grand commander of the Grand Commandery of Maine and served as illustrious potentate of Kora Temple in 1976.
Some of his other notable endeavors included Director of York Insurance Co., director of Kingfield Wood Products and the treasurer of Score Chapter 53.
George was a member of the United Church of Christ in Farmington, Falmouth and Fort Myers, Fla.
He was an avid sportsman; he enjoyed hunting and fishing and saw his beloved Boston Red Sox win the World Series in 2004.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, the former Eleanor Compton. They were married in Farmington in 1952 and together they had five children: Chris Berry of Portland, J. Ambrose Berry and Sandra of Scarborough, George E Berry Jr. and Wendy of Jamesburg, N.J., Melissa Jensen and Paul of Falmouth, and William Berry and Lorraine of Palmyra.
George also leaves five grandchildren, Nicole and Scott Jensen, Nathaniel Crane, George III and Ryanne Berry; two step-grandchildren, Kimberly Mayhew and Kelly Louder; and three step-great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hubel and Riley and Ella Louder.
