MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) – Dwain Chambers’ European 100-meter title was erased Monday along with his other results the past 1 years because of the British sprinter’s doping record.
Chambers was banned for two years after testing positive for the steroid THG in November 2003. All his personal and team results from January 2002 to August 2003 were annulled by track and field’s governing body.
He returned to competition this month after agreeing to repay all winnings and earnings during that time to the International Association of Athletics Federations and UK Athletics. In his comeback race this month, he finished third in 10.07 at the British Grand Prix in Sheffield, England.
Chambers will compete for Britain in the 100 and the relay at the European Cup in Malaga, Spain, which starts Wednesday. It will be his first appearance for Britain since the 2003 world championships.
The decision means the 28-year-old runner loses his second place finish from the IAAF World Athletics final in Paris in September 2002, when he equaled Linford Christie’s European record of 9.87 seconds.
Chambers also was stripped of his winning time of 9.96 seconds in the 100 at the European Championships in Munich, Germany, in 2002. Francis Obikwelu of Portugal moves into first place with his time of 10.06.
Chambers acknowledged last November that he had been using THG 11/2 years before failing an out-of-competition drug test on August 1, 2003. The IAAF then moved to punish him for that period.
Chambers and his British relay team lose gold medals from the 100- and 400-meter relay at the 2002 European Cup in Annecy, France. The relay team also loses the gold medal won at the European Championships.
The result at Annecy also means the British team should not have been eligible to compete at the IAAF World Cup in Madrid in September 2002. But the IAAF decided not to punish individual contestants at the World Cup for Chambers’ actions.
The European Athletic Association still has to confirm the revised results of the meets in Munich and Annecy.
