SUMNER – Travelers on Route 219 through Sumner can look forward to fresh, homemade doughnuts this fall. Voters at a special town meeting Tuesday approved site plan review applications for Beep’s Bakery, as well as Sumner Valley Farm Market.
Glenn D. Hinckley had little to say to a lighthearted group of 15 voters when asked to comment on his application for the bakery.
“Stop in. Buy some doughnuts,” was all he had to say to convince residents to vote in favor of the application.
Asked for more information, he offered that he intends to sell “hand-cut, old-fashioned doughnuts,” with coffee to go along with them.
Hinckley said he expects that most of his business will be wholesale sales to other retailers, but he does intend to have a storefront. He estimated that the store may be open from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. “for the early morning guys.”
Eventually, Beep’s Bakery may offer whoopie pies and bread. The store will be in the garage of Hinckley’s home at 1122 Main St., or Route 219. Hinckley said renovation on the garage may be complete by mid-August.
The application for Sumner Valley Farm Market was also unanimously approved. Daniel and Holly Perron have been running the market at their Greenwoods Road farm since April, when the Planning Board gave them the go-ahead to open as a cottage industry. Since that time, however, the board, which Daniel Perron sits on, decided that the market should go through the full process required of small businesses.
Perron told voters that he and his wife sell organically fed poultry and pork, as well as produce and herbs grown on their farm using organic methods. They also sell items from other farms on consignment, including maple syrup from Wrinkle in Thyme Farm and berries.
Perron said after the meeting that Sumner Valley Farm runs the only farmers’ market in Sumner. He also sells their poultry and pork at the Portland Farmers’ Market and the Bethel Farmers’ Market. The Perrons were the first farmers to sell meat at the farmers’ market in Portland, opening the door for other farmers to do so.
Both businesses were approved by the Planning Board before going before the town for final approval.
