SKOWHEGAN – In what Maine State Police Trooper Matthew Casavant calls a stroke of luck, an Industry burglary on Monday was solved in less than an hour.
Gary Smith, who owns the Ugly Moose Store in Industry, arrived home from New York to find his tools missing Monday, according to Casavant. “Two toolboxes with various types of tools as well as a box of frozen muffin mix, and a bag of sub rolls” were gone.
Smith reviewed video surveillance tapes and spoke with his employees. His manager, he learned, had been disturbed around 4 a.m. Sunday when a man carrying toolboxes stumbled and dropped them in front of her house.
His manager recognized the man as being 21-year-old Brewster Hammond.
Casavant said he took Smith’s complaint, investigated the incident, and arrested Hammond in under an hour. He is charged with burglary and theft.
Smith said Casavant was able to get the stolen property back.
“I feel good we got the kid – I feel like the video cameras are working,” Smith said.
Smith said he thinks Hammond acted “really kinda stupid.”
“He came back on his bicycle to make sure he shut the door,” Smith said.
Smith got it all on tape.
Casavant solved a second burglary – this time in Avon – in under 48 hours. A Mt. Blue Pond Road residence was broken into Saturday, June 24, and two chairs, a lamp, some knickknacks, and a vase were stolen. A toilet was also broken, Casavant said.
After investigating the incident, Casavant arrested Kim White, 48, of Avon. She was “found in possession of the stolen items,” he said, and charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, violation of bail, and violation of a protective order.
