GORHAM – Ada Shiffer Tapper passed away on Tuesday, June 27, at Gorham House, where she has resided since 2001, with her loving family at her side, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born March 12, 1919, in Lewiston, a daughter of Morris Shiffer and Leah Meltzer Shiffer. For more than 60 years, she and her husband, Nathan, whom she roamed in 1939, lived on the middle floor of 6 Green St., Lewiston, in a building formerly owned by her parents, who lived on the first floor, while her sister Goldie Lourie and her family resided on the third floor. Family members often referred to this building as the “Shiffer Family Homestead.”

Ada was a graduate of Lewiston High School and worked in retail in Lewiston, both before and after raising her family. She was employed at the Youth Center, Lincoln Stores and at Ward Brothers. Ada was a member of Beth Abraham Synagogue, and its sisterhood. Ada enjoyed crocheting, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Tapper Miller and her husband, Fred, of Portland; a son, Burton Harris Tapper and his wife, Joyce, of Dayton, Md.; three grandchildren, Sandi Adao and her husband, Mark, of Zachary, La.; Heather MacBeth and her husband, Deane, of Shapleigh, and Mike Miller of Portland; a great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Elizabeth MacBeth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Nathan.
