LEWISTON – The city will foot part of the bill for memorial services for three Lewiston High School students killed in an airplane crash last week.

The City Council voted Tuesday night to put aside $8,000 to help pay for memorial services for Nicholas Babcock, 17, Shannon Fortier, 15, and Teisha Loesberg, 16.

All three were members of Lewiston High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC program. They were on an ROTC summer camp field trip when the four-seater airplane they were flying in went down on the western side of Barker Mountain in Newry.

City councilors opened Tuesday’s meeting with a moment of silence devoted to the three teens, then voted to allocate the $8,000 to help pay for the memorial services.

“We would hope the rest of the community will step forward and respond with help, too,” said City Councilor Lillian O’Brien.
