RUMFORD – State police have taken over a Rumford police investigation into Wednesday morning’s death of a 9-month-old girl.

State police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday afternoon that the infant was found not breathing at 11:30 a.m. by her mother in their home at 47 Plymouth Ave. after she put the child down for a nap.

“There is no indication at this point of foul play,” McCausland said of the investigation.

It’s routine, because state police investigate all deaths of children under the age of 3, he said.

McCausland said he couldn’t release the name of the mother, family or child because he didn’t have their names.

After the mother called 911 to report the incident, Med-Care Ambulance took the infant to Rumford Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, McCausland said.

At that point, State Police Detective Mark Lopez began working on the investigation with Rumford police before taking it over.

McCausland said the child’s body would be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to determine what caused the girl’s death.
