WEST PARIS – Alta Millett Pierce has retired after 37 years as secretary at the Agnes L. Gray School. Pierce began her job in 1969.

Melanie Ellsworth opened the ceremony, giving accolades to Pierce for the job she has done. Pastor Bruce Tynor spoke followed by Terry Merrill, who read a poem, “A Strong Woman.”

Marta Clements said she is grateful for all the help Pierce gave to teachers and children alike. Mary Lou Burns wished Pierce a happy retirement and spoke of all she had done over the years. Bertha DeHaas spoke of their school days.

Donna DiConzo said, “Alta had worked with about 6,000 children while raising three of her own. We salute you, love you dearly and will miss you very much.”

Second-grader Colin Farrar read his poem tribute to Pierce, “In the Middle of the Office.” The fifth grade made a binder to hold poems.

The PTO presented a card and gift certificate to Pierce, also a “picture quilt” signed on the back by all the kids in school.

Pierce thanked all for their participation in her party. It was followed by a buffet put on by the women of the West Paris Baptist Church. Jim Burke provided music on the piano.
