As a former resident of Livermore Falls, having lived there for 18 years, I am relieved to be now living elsewhere. I am also happy that the citizens of Livermore Falls are finally waking up to the fact that something is wrong in the town hall. The recent fiasco has drawn attention to the handling of town affairs.

On June 26, TV news broadcast an interview with the town’s treasurer, Krystal Flagg, who is also the wife of Selectman Russell Flagg.

In that interview she stated that the town meeting of June 13 was “just a bunch of angry people who voted with no rhyme or reason.”

The townspeople who were at that meeting should be commended for their downright common sense in rejecting the selectmen’s try at pulling the wool over people’s eyes. Those who were there should be outraged at the statement by the treasurer and, hopefully, they will change that position from an elected treasurer to an appointed one. They will have their chance to do this at the special town meeting July 10 if they present a petition to get it on the agenda.

The recent problem with the $102,000 in missing funds in the sewer department is another reason things need to be changed at town hall.

Maybe if the town runs fairly well for an extended period without all the top-heavy police, fire and other administration costs, the people will realize that a town of only 3,500 people doesn’t need all that tax burden.
