Social cookbooks
STRATTON – Members of the Dead River Area Historical Society announce a new cookbook has been printed, which includes a collection of recipes from friends, supporters and volunteers. The books sell for $6 each or two for $10. To order them by mail send the required amount plus $2 for postage and handling to: Mary Henderson, P.O. Box 15, Stratton, ME 04982.
The Dead River Area Historical Society will open on Saturday, July 1, for the season and will be open every weekend during July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On display are artifacts, manuscripts and photographs that were donated or loaned by townspeople and descendants of original families of the Dead River region. Collections dating from 1850 include old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, a church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
Chicken barbecue
FARMINGTON – There will be a chicken barbecue to follow the Fourth of July parade, and a Chinese auction from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at American Legion Post 28 at High and Middle streets. The meal will cost $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Admission to the auction is free.
The event is sponsored by Farmington American Legion Post 28 and the auxiliary. Proceeds from the barbecue will go to veterans’ programs.
Holiday parade
FARMINGTON – The annual Farmington Rotary Club parade will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, with kick-off behind the Mallett School parking lot. The theme is “Let Freedom Ring.”
Line up begins at 9 a.m. with judging at 9:30. There will be $50, $25 and $15 cash prizes for the top three winners in eight categories, and everyone who participates will receive a prize ribbon. The classes are military; agriculture, individuals, families and groups; business; antique cars; and new this year, antique tractors.
Food sale
NORTH JAY – A food sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at the North Jay Methodist Parish House. Doughnuts, breads, pies, cakes and fudge will be available. Lunch will be served. The Thrift Shop is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday until November.
Scholarship run
JAY – The John Newcomb Scholarship Run, sponsored by The Friends of John Newcomb, will take place Saturday, July 8, starting at 11 a.m. at the VFW Post on Jewell Street. Breakfast will be available for $5 a plate. Motorcycles and cars will leave the post at 11 a.m. and will proceed to Naples, with a stop at Bray’s Brew Pub for lunch, and then to Bethel with a brief stop at Sunday River Brewing before returning to the VFW for dinner. There will be a 50/50 raffle and silent auction.
Gospel program
LIVERMORE – Gospel singer/songwriter Rocky Morris of South Carolina will be at Emmanuel Assembly of God in Livermore Falls on Sunday, July 9, for the morning service at 9:30. Morris has sung on television and radio programs. He ministers full time in churches and auditoriums in the United States and foreign countries. The youth of Emmanuel will be having a bottle drive on Saturday, July 8, to raise money for Boys and Girls Missionary Crusade and for Speed the Light. Both ministries help missionaries on the mission field to purchase teaching material, computers, vehicles and other items that missionaries need.
Vacation school
FARMINGTON – Farmington Baptist Church on the Whittier Road is hosting Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon July 10 to July 14. The theme is “Artic Edge: Where Adventure Meets Courage!” There will be music, snacks, recreation along with Bible stories and crafts. Families and friends are invited to a “carnival” on Friday night along with the closing program.

Adams reunion
WILTON – The 128th reunion of the descendants of Moses and Martha Kinney Adams will be held on Saturday, July 15, in the reunion building at Kineowatha Park. Those attending should bring something for potluck at noon, table service and a silent auction item.
Ladies’ breakfast
RANGELEY – The Wilhelm Musem has announced its schedule for ladies’ breakfasts. They will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays.
The first one is scheduled for July 5, at Bald Mountain Camps; July 19, Gingerbread House; Aug. 2, Saddleback Motor Lodge; Aug.16, Club House Restaurant; Sept. 6, Country Club Inn; Sept. 20, Catholic ladies, at St Luke’s Catholic Church on Lake Street; Oct. 4, Wilhelm Reich Museum at Orgonon, proceeds to benefit the scholarship program; Oct. 18, open; Nov. 1, ladies American Legion; Nov. 15, Pleasant Street Bed and Breakfast; Dec. 6, Gingerbread House; and Dec. 20 North Country Inn Bed and Breakfast.
