I realize there have been numerous letters recently regarding the budget cuts in Wales, but there is so much more to be said.
As a taxpayer and registered voter, I was present at the town meeting, as well as at the school board meeting when the drastic cuts were made to our school. One important factor that has not been mentioned in the press is that when the final vote on the school budget article was taken, there was utter shock and confusion among the voters.
After numerous amendments and votes, they didn’t know what they were voting on, or even whether a “yes” vote was for the amendment amount or not. There was total uncertainty and confusion. Therefore, the vote passed because people felt as though they had no option.
The reality is that the town’s people didn’t want zero dollars to go to the school; they felt $268,000 was their only choice and that is why such horrible cuts were made to the school.
I aligned myself with other concerned Wales’ voters and we contacted the media, signed and submitted petitions, and convinced selectmen to schedule a special town meeting on July10.
If selectmen truly believe that voters in our town want the school budget article to stay at $268,000, then that is what the voters will vote for at the special meeting.
