NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – A brief look Thursday at the U.S. Women’s Open:
Slow to start: Heavy fog kept the first round from being played:
Catching up: The first round will be played today, the second round Saturday and the final two rounds on Sunday.
Last time: The first round of the 2003 Masters was washed out by rain.
Grand finale: The last time 36 holes was played Sunday at a U.S. Women’s Open was in 1990 at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Noteworthy: The previous three majors at Newport all concluded with 36 holes – the 1895 U.S. Amateur, the 1895 U.S. Open and the 1995 U.S. Amateur.
