AUBURN – Edward W. Lenhert, 78, of Turner, died at the Hospice House on Saturday afternoon, July 1, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Jan. 5, 1928, the son of Walter and Aniella Jandszinski Lenhert. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Syracuse prior to his service to his country in the U.S. Army and Air Force.

He met Bea Hebert in Florida, and they were later married at St. Louis Church on Nov. 22, 1952.

Edward made his living as a bartender and waiter for the Poland Spring Inn and Lakewood Resort in Skowhegan. Waiting tables was something he took pride in. Edward even waited on President Harry S. Truman.

He later worked in the civil service as a manager for the Officers’ Club at the Brunswick Naval Air Station for 20 years. His Officers’ Club won awards that brought him to Chicago for the “Best Mess” award. He retired from civil service in 1985.

He was a member of St. Philips Church.

He was an avid golfer and was the 1962 club champ at Martindale Country Club. He was also a pool and card player, and a proud Pepre.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years; a son, John and Lynn Lenhert of Auburn; daughters, Nancy Lenhert of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Mary Anne Cobb and Allen Sterling of Lewiston, and Amy Cooper and her husband, Mark, of Pittston; a sister, Agnes Wieczorek and her husband, Frank, of Syracuse, N.Y.; and grandchildren Nathan, Zack, Adam, Billy, Sam, Leah, Stephen, Katie and Gabrielle.

He was predeceased by a brother, Chester Lenhert; and mother-in-law and special friend, Gabrielle Hebert.
