FIREWORKS USE: The use of backyard fireworks has doubled since 2000, rising to 255 million pounds nationwide last year.
THE INJURIES: An estimated 10,800 U.S. children and adults were treated for fireworks injuries last year, up from 9,600 in 2004. Injuries to those under age 20 accounted for 55 percent of last year’s figures.
TYPES OF FIREWORKS: Firecrackers caused the most injuries, but sparklers accounted for almost half the injuries to children younger than 5 last year.
