AUBURN – Omer G. Dumont, 74, died Saturday, July 1, after a long stay at Clover Manor.
He was born in Auburn on Feb. 21, 1932, and was married to his loving wife, Carolyn Ellen Bubier, for 44 years. They were married in Auburn on Sept. 21, 1950.
In Omer’s earlier years, he was a policeman in the Auburn Police Reserves. He also was the president of the Democratic Council for the election of Hubert Humphrey, where he personally met Hubert Humphrey. He was called “Mr. President” when serving on this council.
He also was well known for volunteering, in his wheelchair, at Central Maine Medical Center and received an appreciation award for volunteer service of 4,100 hours. While a volunteer there, he took care of babies, helped people in bereavement and helped patients turn in their absentee ballots for voting. Among his other accomplishments, Omer donated an uncountable amount of blood to many people and received pins for donating gallons of blood to the Red Cross.
He was a member of Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn. He retired in 1986 after a long employment at Pioneer Plastics. He liked to travel and spend time with his family. Once, while traveling, he saved a policeman’s life in Louisiana and was given an appreciation award by former Gov. Wallace.
His sensitive nature always gave in to kids. He loved babies and could not say “no” to any child, especially at the ice cream truck. Many camping trips with the neighborhood kids left memories still being talked about.
His survivors are his three children, Daniel Dumont and wife, Madelyn, of South Portland, Diana Martin and Catherine Ann (Dumont) Blais and husband, Bertrand R., all of Auburn; eight grandchildren, Melissa StPierre, Steven Omer Dumont, Douglas Dumont, Carrie Ellen LeClair, Valarie Dumont, Cassandra Mae Dumont, Jennifer Mae Hughes and Katy Hughes, he was like a father to Steven, Carrie and Katy; and nine great-grandchildren, Christopher R. StPierre, Kelsey M. StPierre, Luke E. LeClair, Carol-Ann LeClair, Kiara E. Richards, Benjamin, Joshua, Nicholas and Mason Dumont.
He has also left behind many loving friends and relatives too numerous to list.
Omer was predeceased by his wife; his parents; three brothers, Roland, Lucien and Theodore; and his sister, Jeanne Igniri.
His family would like to extend a “thank you” to Clover Manor for all the care they gave him when he stayed there. It was his home for the last seven years, and he made many friends.
Omer Dumont was a devoted husband and a loving father. He will be dearly missed by all.
