SOMIS, Calif. (AP) – Two members of a family that summered in Jackson, N.H., were killed in a private plane crash in Somis, Calif., reportedly on their way to New Hampshire.

Karen Santoro, 43, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and her 5-year-old son, Ian, died in Saturday’s crash. Two other family members, pilot Robert Santoro, 42, and son, Dawson, 7, survived.

The Santoros have been summer residents of Jackson for the past few years.

A family friend told The Conway Daily Sun the Santoros were headed to New Hampshire when the crash occurred, approximately 25 miles from Santa Barbara.

Authorities say young Dawson flagged down two teenage brothers who pulled the young boy’s father from the burning wreckage.

“He was waving his arms and saying his dad was hurt,” 17-year-old Rene Herrera told the Ventura County Star. While his brother, Edgar, took the boy to the back seat of their car, and Rene went into the smoke and pulled out Robert Santoro.

Fourteen-year-old Ryan Badgley was skeet shooting nearby with the Ventura Military Explorers and saw the accident scene.

“You could feel the heat. It was intense,” Badgley said. “And he (Herrera) just went up there and grabbed the guy by his shirt and pulled him out.”

Dawson Santoro was released from the hospital on Monday and his father is recovering from a nearly severed leg, several broken bones and facial trauma, medical officials said. Both were thrown from the plane as it crashed, authorities said.

Investigators said Santoro radioed that he was having engine problems and was headed for Camarillo Airport when the plane crashed into a drainage ditch near a lemon grove and burst into flames.

Somis is about 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
