PLAINFIELD, N.H. (AP) – Locals got a surprise prior to the start of the annual Fourth of July parade: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer showed up to read the Declaration of Independence.
Breyer, who has a vacation home in Plainfield, was asked to do the honors by one of his daughters, Chloe, and the Rev. Suellen Leugers, pastor of the Plainfield Community Baptist Church. Breyer’s daughter had gotten married in the church about seven years ago and has kept in touch with Leugers.
“It just came together,” Leugers said. “We kind of wanted to maintain a sense of privacy and security for him, too.”
Breyer read the historic document – less the signatures -on the porch of the Plainfield General Store. He later stood on the sidelines and watched the parade with his grandchildren, Leugers said.
