AUBURN – A New Gloucester man was seriously injured Wednesday when his car slammed into a tractor trailer and slid beneath the rig.

Kevin Collins, 32, was at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston Wednesday night with injuries suffered in the 2:40 p.m. wreck at Eastman Lane and Poland Spring Road.

Police said Collins was driving on Eastman Lane when he crashed into the side of a tractor trailer that was turning onto the roadway.

The Maine Metal Recycling truck, driven by 53-year-old Albert Harris, was hauling scrap metal at the time, according to Auburn police Lt. Scott Watkins.

Harris was not hurt in the collision.

Collins’ Chevrolet slid beneath the rig, peeling the hood back and pinning Collins inside. Police and firefighters freed Collins from the wreck and he was taken to CMMC where he was in the hospital intensive care unit Wednesday night, Watkins said.

Because the crash resulted in potentially deadly injuries, and because a commercial vehicle was involved, Auburn police called Maine State Police for assistance.

State Police sent troopers to the scene to assist with a reconstruction as well as investigators from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement team. The cause of the crash remained under investigation late Wednesday night.
