Robert English hit the nail on the head in his letter of June 9. He couldn’t have stated it any simpler.

I did not attend this year’s town meeting, but I will be at the next special town meeting to reconsider the school budget.

What happened at the town meeting on June 10 will always happen when young parents who have a vested interest in their schools stay away. I speak from my many years at town meetings.

I have lived in this community for 43 years. My children have been through the system. Many of their teachers are still here. Those teachers gave my children the strong foundation they stand on today. Yes, I supported my children – and all of the children of Wales – by serving on the school board for 16 years. I know the many hours the school board has agonized over the 2006-07 budget. I suspect it was a difficult task. I am sure this is the best they could do.

They are asking for our support and we need to give it to them.

No one likes the thought of a higher tax burden, but this year we need to bite the bullet and support this school budget as presented. If we don’t, then we are putting that tax burden on the backs of our children.

Until Augusta sees fit to change that horrible, unfair EPS school funding law, all of the small rural communities are going to suffer.
