WEST PARIS – The next step in the reconstruction of Main Street is planned for later this summer, but construction bids are due at the town office by Thursday, July 13.
Town Manager Donald Woodbury said work will include a short stretch from the Bradeen residence to Kingsbury Street to address safety concerns regarding the sharp corner by the Benson property.
“The plan is to change the elevation of the roadway and flatten the current rise, which should improve the site distance and create a safer slope to the corner,” Woodbury said.
Work should begin in late July and be finished by early fall.
The project will be phase three of the rebuild. The first phase done three years ago included a section from the railroad tracks to the Bradeen residence where the sharp crown was removed and improvements to the drainage system were completed. Two years ago, a section from Kingsbury Street to Pioneer Street was rebuilt to improve drainage and lower the center crown of the roadway.
Along with the rebuild of the street, the West Paris Water District has been replacing old water mains and installing new connections to residences.
This year’s phase was originally planned for last summer but was postponed to avoid having it partially done when the winter freeze-up arrived.
Woodbury said the highway crew will work along with whoever receives the construction contract.
Money to pay for the work is available in the Main Street account, and that will be combined with funds from the Maine Department of Transportation as Main Street is part of state highway 219.
