AUGUSTA – Hilda Julia (Seilonen) Cobb, 84, a Finnish farm girl born in Harrison on Nov. 22, 1921, passed away Friday, July 7, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
She was the youngest of six children born of Charles and Helmi Seilonen.
Her husband, Henry Blair Cobb Jr., died in 2000. They married in 1947. Their three children, Deborah Ann Middleton of Vassalboro, Catherine Mary Cobb of Augusta and Michael Blair Cobb of South Berwick, surrounded her during her final days.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Hannah Middleton, Mary Middleton, Catie Lane and husband, Jason, Shane Brown and her children Hope and Joshua, Janice Pooler and her children A.J. and Jessie, and her granddaughter Alexis.
Hilda was a quiet, strong lady who will be remembered for her enjoyment of mackerel fishing, digging clams, Broiler Day in Belfast, camping, boating, and making fresh donuts and Finnish sweet bread.
One of her proudest accomplishments, besides caring for her family, was becoming a nursing assistant at the age of 52.
She was an avid Celtics fan and enjoyed collecting trading cards, Sports Illustrated magazines and Larry Bird memorabilia.
Hilda worked at Bradbury Nursing Home and Waldo County Hospital in Belfast before she and Blair moved to Dedham, Mass., to begin a career in private caretaking. They lived in West Paris for 17 years prior to Blair’s death, and Hilda moved to Augusta to be closer to her children.
Thanks to all the staff of Maine Veterans’ Home and HealthReach Hospice for their love and caring support.
