Market opens
LEWISTON – There will be fresh vegetables, free flowers, face-painting and music on the opening day of the Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, July 11. The market will be held at Kennedy Park near the corner of Bates and Pine streets from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays.
The market’s third season will not only offer fresh, locally-grown produce but also baked goods, cooking demonstrations, free recipes and food samples, and booths with information on health and wellness. Cash, WIC and EBT will be accepted.

Rotary speaker
LEWISTON – Members of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club will hear a presentation by Jennifer Bridgers, community relations representative of the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, at noon Thursday, July 13, at the Ramada Inn.
The Jackson Laboratory is the world’s largest mammalian genetics research laboratory and rare in that it is nonprofit and independent of hospital or university affiliation. Areas studied include bioinformatics, cancers, aging/development, neurological and sensory disorders, immune and blood disorders and metabolic disorders.
Seventeen Nobel Prizes can be linked to the research, education and resources at the Jackson Laboratory. The laboratory is ranked one of the top 10 largest employers in Maine.
Bridgers is a native of Bangor, a 1992 graduate of Bates College and has been employed by the laboratory since 1993. She is also a Rotarian, being a member of the Bar Harbor Rotary Club.

Schoolhouse open
POLAND – The Poland Historical Society will open the Old Schoolhouse to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays through the end of August. Members of the Poland Historical Society will be available to give tours and answer questions. There will be some new displays this summer.
Grange event
GRAY – Members of Androscoggin Pomona Grange will meet at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 16, at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray for the annual summer outing. People are asked to bring chairs and a salad or dessert to share. All members and guests are welcome.
Vacation school
LEWISTON – United Baptist Church at 250 Main St. will hold a Jungle Adventure Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, July 17 to 21. Children, kindergarten age through sixth grade, are welcome. For more information or to register by July 14, call 782-0821.
Clean-up day
AUBURN – There will be a workday from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 29, at the Woodbury Brackett Environmental Center.
Volunteers are needed to help spruce up the grounds. There is a list of projects suitable for all ages and levels of ability, under the direction of a trained landscape artist. Refreshments will be provided.
Those wishing to volunteer are asked to contact the center and tell the number of volunteers, their age groups, and any special needs. If possible, bring gardening tools. Bridge results
NEW GLOUCESTER – The bridge club met July 9 at the Masonic Building, intersection of Routes 100 and 231, where a three-table Howell movement was played.
Finishing first in Flight A were Luke Merry and Les Buzzell, with John Joys and Nick Karmessinis and Bailey Geeslin and Richard Balian tied for second and third.
Finishing first in Flight B were Bailey Geeslin and Richard Balian and second, Diane and Bob Bishop.
