NEW GLOUCESTER – On Monday, Theodore Shane was unanimously named New Gloucester’s public works director by selectmen.

He replaces Kevin Doyle, who resigned abruptly in May following citizen protest over extensive logging of several miles of rights of way along two seasonal roadways, Tobey and Swamp roads.

Shane was hired last spring as the public works foreman replacing Scott Hodgman, who retired.

Town Manager Rosemary Kulow praised Shane, who has several years of experience as public works director in Sebago, where she formerly worked as town manager.

“Mr. Shane has several years’ successful experience as a hands-on public works director, is admired and respected by his peers, and comes very highly recommended,” Kulow said.

Selectman Dale Maschino participated in the interview process.

In other business, the board agreed to request pedestrian signs from Maine’s Department of Transportation for Route 231 intersection in Lower Gloucester.

An unnamed resident said speeding traffic was dangerous in the Intervale/Upper Gloucester/Cobb’s Bridge roads intersection.

Selectmen agreed to add the Bald Hill Road at Upper Gloucester Road and at the Royal River to the request for signs.

Selectmen agreed to send requests for proposals to hire consultant services to evaluate town facilities.

The study includes reviews of the town’s proposed facilities long-range plan. Existing buildings to be evaluated include the town hall building and complex in Lower Gloucester; the Public Works Complex at Upper Gloucester and the Lower Gloucester Fire Station.

The study should take six weeks once a consultant is named.

The Gazebo Committee is seeking a volunteer carpenter to lead the charge with volunteer helpers needed to erect a gazebo in memory of former Selectmen Robert Leighton, who died several years ago.

Roughly $20,000 has been collected by donations of cash and in-kind help to the project, said James Fitch who heads the citizen group.

In addition, a fundraiser for the gazebo is planned on Aug. 26 at Upper Gloucester where a bake sale, bottle drive and car wash will take place.
