RUMFORD – Albert J. Gallant, 84, of Essex Avenue, died Sunday, July 9, after a long illness.

He was born in Rumford, on Nov. 8, 1921, a son of John P. and Mary Ann (Pineau) Gallant. He was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School, Class of 1939.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a prisoner of war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was employed for several years with Dumoulin’s Catering in Rumford. He also was employed for many years with “Horizons,” working with handicapped children.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and he enjoyed square dancing.

Surviving are two brothers, Paul Gallant and Carl Gallant; a sister, Pearl Gallant; as well as many nieces and nephews.
