KINGFIELD – Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Seth Wescott will be the grand marshal of the Kingfield Festival Days parade on Saturday, July 22. He will share the honor with Mrs. Kingfield 2006, who will be crowned on Friday, July 21, as part of the Kingfield Days celebration.
Activities are planned for day and night during the festival. Some will have an admission or participation fee, while others are free.
Events begin Thursday night with a cribbage tournament at the Herbert Grand Hotel. Entries in the flower arrangement and amateur photo contests must also be dropped off in the hotel lobby that day and the public is invited to judge the entries through Saturday.
Weekend-long events will include a Historical Society open house, a field labyrinth, a quilt and flower show at the Baptist Church, and the Amazing Kingfield Race.
A takeoff of the television series The Amazing Race, this contest will feature teams of two – one adult and one minor – competing in different games to win the final prize of $150. All but 10 teams will be eliminated Friday night during the first three events. Details will be kept secret until the time of each event. Other activities on Friday include Kids Fun Time, a Relay For Life roast pork dinner to benefit the American Cancer Society, a teen dance from 8 to 10 p.m. at Webster Hall, 70’s Night at Longfellow’s and an adult dance at Nostalgia Tavern.
The Depot Street Artisan Fair, a book sale at Webster Library, free blood pressure checks at Mt. Abram Health Center, a pet parade, doll carriage and bike parade, chicken barbecue sponsored by the fire department and a fly-casting demonstration will be among the activities on Saturday.
Stage performances in the center of town will include the Magic of Conjuring Carroll and storyteller and folk singer Adam Miller. The parade will begin at noon Saturday. This year’s theme is “Back When,” and categories are pre-1900, 1900-1949, 1950-69 and 1970-present.
Following the parade will be a bed race, the Whatever Floats Race on the Carrabassett River, So You Want to Be A Millionaire game and a skateboard jam at Grand Central Station, where Wescott will make a guest appearance.
Events Saturday night include a high school soccer scrimmage at Kingfield Elementary, a contra dance featuring The Racket Factory in the UnitedKingfield Bank parking lot, bingo at the American Legion followed by a flag burning ceremony at 8 p.m., Dave Mello Band playing the town stage and an adult dance at Nostalgia Tavern.
Sunday begins with a truck pull at Jordan’s pit, followed by an acoustic brunch featuring local talent at Orange Cat Cafe, mud football championships, bluegrass and country music at the stage, go-cart races, and the “Together Again” variety show sponsored by Relay for Life at Kingfield Elementary. There also will be a barbecue cook off, for which food must be prepared on site. Pre-register at the Old Schoolhouse Cafe or call 265-2022. Registration is $10, and food cooked during the contest can be sold.
