NEW GLOUCESTER – A 17-year-old boy drowned at Sabbathday Lake on Wednesday afternoon.

Rescuers attempted to revive the teenager, but he did not recover.

Ryan Lagasse of New Gloucester had been swimming and tossing a football with his younger brother and a friend when he swallowed water and choked, according to Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland.

McCausland said Lagasse’s brother and friend pulled him from the water and attempted to resuscitate him on shore.

Emergency crews who showed up a short time later also attempted to revive the boy, but he died on the way to a Lewiston hospital, McCausland said.

The investigation was turned over to Maine State Police, who interviewed witnesses and went to Central Maine Medical Center, where the teenager had been taken.

The drowning was classified as accidental. It happened a short distance from shore in an area alongside the Old Route 26, McCausland said.
