Pena on road back
By The Associated Press
PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Wily Mo Pena, on a 30-day rehab assignment for Boston, was 1-for-3 with a walk in the Pawtucket Red Sox 3-0 win over the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night.
Former Sea Dog Kason Gabbard gave up just two hits in seven innings for his first Triple-A win and Corky Miller drove in all the runs.
Gabbard (1-3), promoted from Double-A Portland on June 24, struck out six and walked two.
Miller hit his fourth home run of the season off losing pitcher Tim Redding (7-7) with one out in the third inning to make it 1-0.
Miller hit a two-run single in the seventh after Ron Calloway singled and Luke Allen doubled.
Jermaine Van Buren tossed two innings of hitless relief for his 10th save.
Charlotte’s Ruben Rivera doubled with two outs in the fifth but was stranded at second base.
Josh Fields drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and advanced to second on Casey Rogowski’s sacrifice bunt, but Gabbard retired the next two batters on grounders.
Pena has been on the disabled list since May 27 after left wrist surgery.
